The second-longest known cave in the world, Jewel Cave National Monument has over 145 miles of explored paths and explorations deeper into the cave system still continue. Visitors might not explore the furthest reaches of the cave, but they will get the chance to sign up for one of the cave tours which range from somewhat to very physically demanding. Filled with calcite crystals, the cave gives the impression of being lined with gems, hence the name Jewel Cave. Above the caves, the park holds 1,279 acres of land that provide walking trails and hiking paths both in and around the park. Located 13 miles west of the town of Custer and 17 miles from Custer State Park, other nearby attractions include Wind Cave National Park and Mount Rushmore National Monument; both are about 35 miles away.
